Gillian (1980) lives and works in Bristol. She studied a Masters in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking at the University of the West of England and has studied etching at Crown Point Press in San Francisco. She is an editioner at Spike Print Studio and works as a technical instructor in the Print Centre at UWE. In 2013 she received the Rebecca Smith Award and in 2012 she won the Galleries Magazine Award at BITE: Artists Making Prints.

Gillian's work is about paring down line and form to a minimum, in order to evoke a particular emotion. She is interested in how simplicity, or the economy of composition, can produce a quiet yet powerful presence in a space. Created through a process of reiteration, Gillian uses found or personal photographs which are distilled through various processes.  Stripped down of unnecessary features, the form is presented alone, revealing its idiosyncratic character.

“I was drawn to etching because of the alchemy of the medium. I embrace the fact that this process makes you slow down, and that you never quite know what you are going to get until the plate is printed.

I work on copper plates using acid to bite lines and tonal areas.  The compositions are based on drawings, which in turn were based on photographs.  It is this distillation of the image that interests me, and the indirect nature of etching lends itself perfectly to this Chinese whispering effect.”
